Kevin McLaughlan, Safety Advisor for the Royal Yacht, based at the Ocean Terminal in Leith completed the NVQ level 4 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. An ex shipyard worker and health & safety representative Kevin went through his safety reps training with his Trade Union and continued his interest in safety matters by passing his NEBOSH General Certificate. Joining the staff of the Royal Yacht Britannia in the maintenance department it was not long before he was once again involved in safety matters. Following a spell as safety officer / maintenance operator the management decided, following a RoSPA safety review, to make his position full time. He said of the NVQ- "I was writing policies, carrying out inspections, holding safety meeting, and completing risk and COSHH assessments" so I might as well claim for this under the NVQ system. Although the Level 4 was very time consuming with the assistance I received from the Centre I was able to complete this in under two years. |

John Fagan of DHL EXEL Supply Chain in Livingston, Scotland receiving his certificate from John B McLaughlin, City & Guilds Centre Manager. John who applied through RoSPA to register for his Level 4 In Occupational Health and Safety Practice also felt that he had learned a lot as a result of the NVQ process which encouraged him to further develop existing safety processes operated by the Company. He has since recommended other colleagues to pursue this route for IOSH membership.

If stuck the assessors assists” Although the NVQ is not a training programme as such most candidates feel that they gain a lot from compiling their own portfolio of evidence.
